Full-grain leather is the most durable and characterful leather you can buy — but only if you treat it right. Unlike coated or bonded leathers, full-grain keeps its natural surface, which means it breathes, develops a patina, and responds to care. Here's how to keep yours looking its best for years.
1. Wipe It Down Regularly
Dust and grit are the quiet enemies of leather. Every couple of weeks, wipe your bag or accessory with a soft, dry cloth. For light dirt, a barely-damp cloth works — just avoid soaking the leather.
2. Condition Every Few Months
Leather is skin, and like skin it can dry out. Every three to four months, apply a small amount of quality leather conditioner with a clean cloth, working it in with circular motions. This restores oils, prevents cracking, and deepens the color.
3. Keep It Away From Moisture and Heat
Prolonged moisture can stain and warp leather, while direct heat (radiators, car dashboards, hot sun) dries it out. If your piece does get wet, let it air-dry naturally away from heat sources.
4. Store It Properly
When not in use, store bags stuffed lightly with tissue to hold their shape, inside a dust bag, in a cool and ventilated spot. Avoid plastic, which traps moisture.
The Payoff
Do these four things and your full-grain leather won't just survive — it'll get better. That patina, the softening, the character marks: they're the reward for taking care of something built to last.
